They’re hosting a FREE home game on Saturday, September 26th, and will host a job fair at the stadium at the same time – this from a team that has sold out their games for 160 straight games and who have almost four thousand people on a waiting list for season tickets. I’m gonna go out on a limb, here, and say that the team isn’t hurting for ticket buyers and fans just now, which means the real priority here is to bring some jobs and job applicants together.
There’s only so many hockey fans out there, right? But in this economy, everybody needs work.
In all seriousness, this isn’t a stunt or a gimmick. The job fair is being organized by Imagine Pittsburgh Jobs, who list about 22,000 jobs – most of them with salaries of at least $40,000. The focus of the group is to woo college graduates into staying in the Pittsburgh area, rather than taking their skills and moving away to other cities. To reflect this, eight thousand tickets are being given to college and trade school students, while the other ten thousand tickets are going to area youth hockey leagues, an underprivileged kids charity, and members of the teams Kid’s Club. (Joining the Kid’s Club is free, too, by the way. Thought I’d toss that out there.)
There’s no catch, these are really free tickets to a real NHL game.
